Gleeson to bring 220 affordable, quality homes to Workington, Cumbria
Housebuilder Gleeson has been granted planning permission to build 220 new homes in Workington, Cumbria.
The development, which will be known as The Rowans, will see the 23 acre site located off Ashfield Road South, Workington be transformed into beautiful and carefully designed, quality, affordable 2, 3 and 4 bedroom semi and detached homes.
Prices on the development are anticipated to start at just £117,995 for a two-bedroom home. The government Help to Buy: Equity Loan scheme will be available on the development, meaning prospective homeowners will be able to buy a home here with just a 5% deposit, ideal for first time buyers and young families in the area.
The Rowans is well situated, with many amenities close by, including a doctors surgery, leisure centre, eight primary schools, two secondary schools, supermarkets and both independent and national retailers all just minutes away from the development.
The development itself will be designed around existing mature trees and the small river which is located to the bottom of the site and will provide access to scenic walks and wildlife. Gleeson will also build three play areas on the development, one of which will be a timber trail next to the picturesque woodland, ensuring there is plenty of green open space for local people to enjoy.
Bringing £20million of investment to Workington, the development will see 231 jobs created, along with 451 jobs created and sustained through the supply chain. Following the planning permission approval, Gleeson will contribute £60,255 towards education in Workington, and to improve roads in the area, Gleeson will donate £15,460, to facilitate highway works nearby.
Construction at The Rowans is set to begin in summer 2021, with the show homes opening later in the year. The first new homes for sale will be released for sale in September 2021 with the first homeowners expected to move into their homes in the Spring of 2022.
This will be Gleeson’s seventh site in Cumbria, with six currently live including Florence Drive in Egremont, Briar Lea Park, Greymoor Meadows and Moorside Place in Carlisle, Sutherland Court in Barrow-in-Furness and a new development set to launch on Dearham Road in Broughton Moor, ensuring that the area has plenty of quality, affordable homes for young first-time buyers.
David Wright, Land Director at Gleeson said:
“We are delighted to be bringing 220 much-needed affordable homes for first time buyers and key workers to Workington. This site further establishes Gleeson in Cumbria, particularly in West Cumbria. There will be exceptional demand from first-time buyers for these homes and we are proud to be making this long-term investment to help our customers get their foot onto the housing ladder.
“We anticipate that many people from the local area will be interested in The Rowans and also expect that the majority of personnel on site will be made up of local labour and contractors.”
Gleeson build homes that are genuinely affordable, providing customers with the opportunity for wealth creation through home ownership. 86% of Gleeson’s customers are first-time buyers, with three out of four of all buyers being under the age of 35. A typical owner of a 3-bedroom Gleeson home pays, on average, £75 per week in mortgage repayments with Help to Buy versus the £135 per week paid by those in rental properties.
Gleeson is seeking local labour and sub-contractors to work on this exciting new development, including applications from local young people who are interested in joining the Gleeson apprenticeship scheme.
